Why I use a Professional grade Cleanser over a Drug store Cleanser:

'Don't rely on labels to give you the information you need, trust only the ingredient list'

Cleansing is the most important step in skincare. Removing the dirt, grime, make-up and build up of whatever else lands itself on to our skin throughout the day. And just so we’re clear,  a cleansing wipe won't do. An actual cleanser that you can massage into your skin. Whether it be cream, oil or gel. No other products work into the skin if it hasn’t being cleaned.

We are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing cleansers these days. There are so many for each skin type. But what many don’t realise is, looking at the back of the ingredient list is the most crucial part in choosing a cleanser, or any skin care product for that matter.

If you have happy skin that doesn’t need much TLC, then you can pretty much get away with using any cleanser from any skincare brand. Lucky you! But if you have problematic skin, or have skin concerns- then you really have to do your homework on which brands will suit you. And chances are the more Professional, Clinical products will help repair your skin. Due to the fact they are made mostly by doctors, dermatologists and scientists, in a safe, monitored environment and have a medical background. They use advancedand medical formulations for their ingredients.Which make the product more result driven, by using proper molecule sizes that can penetrate the skin layers. Professional skincare brands spend more money on their research and ingredients, rather than advertising. (Just take a moment and think about all those skincare ads you see on TV- I like to avoid these brands!)

For the last few months I have been using this purifying cleanser by Hydropeptide.
I started to get a lot more blackheads than usual on my cheeks and my tzone (forehead, nose and chin) was showing up a lot oilier.
The main ingredients in this cleasner is kaolin and salicylic acid. Along with hydrating and antiageing peptides. Peptides are an advanced ingredient in skincare and every anti-ageing product should have them. Read more about peptides here.
This cleanser helps clean out the clogged pores in my skin without drying it up. Unlike some drug store products which contain astringents which dry up not only the oil but the whole skin.

Professional grade products are usually on the pricier side, I paid around 30e for this cleanser. But as I said above- the ingredients are much more active and advanced than store bought cleansers. This will benefit my skin in the long run ;-) Similar ingredients may be listed on the back of drug store products, but what you may not notice is that they are very last in on the ingredient list- meaning they are in the lowest amount.

Professional grade skincare products are only available from advanced skincare clinics, doctors, chemists, dermatologists, salons and spas. With people selling them who have a professional background on how to use them and educate those who want to use them.

Don’t buy from places you don’t know. And don’t ever buy from online sites like ebay, strawberry.net and amazon. I have had many clients tell me horrible stories about false products they bought online.Allergies, reactions and so on. You do not know where these sources are coming from over the internet, unless it’s a registered professional skincare site.

As a skin therapist myself, and working with many different skin types and skin brands over the years. I really have seen huge improvements on client’s skin with regular facials, using of course- professional skincare brands. But also, these clients saw the results themselves, which leads them to buying  products they can realistically see themselves using at home in between their facial treatments.

In no way am I saying do not use drug store products. I use them from time to time. Especially face masks, simply because they are more affordable. If I could afford a whole range of a particular professional skincare brand then god be it I would have it all! But with skin that doesn't have major skin issues or allergies- then your basic drug store products are fine for you. However, it’s a little bit of a different story with on-going skin concerns and problematic skin such as acne, in my opinion professional skincare is the only way to go for safe and better results. You can read more about ingredients to avoid here and the ingredients to look out for which are good here.

If you’re not sure which products to use, go and see a skincare therapist and they will analyse your skin and recommend what will be best for your skin.

What are your favourite skincare brands to use at home?

Lots of love,
