My weekly Exfoliation routine

‘’Exfoliation is key. It eliminates dead skin cells and polishes skin, refines pores and smoothes wrinkles’’

Weekly exfoliation is such an important step if you want healthy radiant looking skin. The Skin is left much brighter once exfoliated, and products can penetrate deeper and better once build up of dead skin has been removed.

Exfoliating products contain ingredients that allow them to break down the top layer of the skin, dissolving dead skin cells and speeding up the skin cell cycle of the skin.

We all have a skin cell cycle. Which means we have new cells being produced all the time. It takes 28 days for new cells to reach the top of the skin. This makes the skin more youthful and plump looking. But as we get older, the skin cell cycle in our body slows down, and it takes longer for these cells to reach the surface, and this is when we usually start to see more concerns with our skin.

Exfoliating 2-3 times a week will help with the over-all appearance and health of the skin. Especially helping to speed up the skin cell cycle- improving the signs of dryness, oiliness, acne, ageing, and sun damaged skin.

This is my weekly exfoliation routine.

I like to use a more professional, active and advanced exfoliator 1-2 times a week for my skin. This one contains the AHA lactic acid, peptides and vitamin C which are really advanced ingredients meaning they can work better and further into the skin, because of the chemical composition.

This is the one I'll use when my skin is seriously slacking, looking really dull, dry or oily. I steam my skin first for about 10 minutes. I then apply the peel 1 which is vitamin C crystals. I massage that in and then apply peel 2 which is lactic acid. The lactic acid which is a Alpha Hydroxy Acid ingredient- activates the vitamin C and honestly leaves the skin looking so much clearer and brighter.  You can read more about Hydropeptide hereImage Skincare also have great active exfoliants)

Sometimes I use a more basic and quick scrub/exfoliator in the shower, like these two. I use these in between the above advanced exfoliation product. But they aren’t as active, they don't give the same result as the exfoliator with AHA’s.

Steaming the skin before exfoliating really helps the penetration of any exfoliator, it opens the pores so that the product really can get in there and do its job.

How to steam?
You need 3 things for facial steaming. Boiling water, a big bowl, and big towel.
Pour water into the bowl. Place your head over bowl, low enough so that you can feel the steam rise on to your skin, but not too low that you will burn your face.
Use the towel to cover cover your head and bowl, so that the steam is only rising on to your skin.
Do this for as long as you can 5-15 mins.

*If exfoliating hasn’t been apart of your weekly routine then defiantly start to use one  this week. Pick x2 days a week, and use a product that suits your skin type and always steam before hand. I like to apply a mask on my skin the same day/night that I have exfoliated because this is like your mini facial in the week. Read about my favourite mask for dry skin here and oily skin here.

*If you have a main skin concern, then invest in a professional exfoliator that has active ingredients. This will work on repairing your skin. AND ALWAYS buy from a reliable source, (skin clinic, dermatologist, spa or salon)
If you don't have any skin concerns, but want to look after your skin, boots brands have a great range.
