10 Things to Know about Moisturizer

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say I get lazy with my skincare routine during the winter months,I blame the cold weather. But sticking to a good routine day and night is important no matter how freezing it is outside.

Moisturizer is the most important step during the winter, to keep skin hydrated and nourished. I wanted to share some tips with you about moisturizing over the next few months.

Take note ;-).......

1. Moisturizer doesn’t do its job if the skin isn’t clean. So you must cleanse before you apply it. Otherwise it will only sit on top of dead skin. Not penetrating INTO the skin to hydrate the cells.

2. Moisturize twice a day. AM & PM. No matter the weather SPF should be applied on top of your moisturizer (unless its in it) No lower or higher than a 30, everyday
PM moisturizer should be richer, our skin regenerates as we sleep- so a heavier product will work better into the skin.

3. Never apply Moisturizer under the eye area. This area is too thin and it will clog the skin. Read my eye care post HERE

4. The face starts on the chest. So ALWAYS bring your products down here and work up. You will thank yourself in 10 years. As this is the skin that ages the quickest.

5. Ingredients to look for in Moisturizers: Hylauronic acid, Glycerin, Peptides, Ceramides, Natural oils, vitamins A,C,E, antioxidants, AHA’s, and Fatty alcohols such as stearyl alcohol and cetyl alcohol(these alcohols are non drying)
*These are all ACTIVE ingredients and penetrate deep into the skin giving good results.
*The first few ingredients listed on the back of any product are present in large amounts, the last few ingredients are what is very little in the product. Always read the back and make sure it’s a good enough product for your skin.

6. The winter months call for fires lighting and central heating blasting, these have an affect on our skin. They dry it out completely. So applying moisturizer x2 a day becomes crucial. Or you will be left with flaking dry skin.

7.Exfoliation x1-3 times a week is important all year round, to remove dead skin cells, brighten and renew the skin. Exfoliating during winter even on skin that is already dry is important, because it is going to buff away the old cells causing the dryness and flakiness. Once these are removed. Moisturizer can go back to its job, and penetrate the skin- hydrating the cells.

8.If your skin is extra dry (like mine) and you have tried a lot of creams, but you still experience dryness. Then I suggest you start using a oil (only if you’re not concerned with breakouts and oiliness). The oil will help nourish the skin, penetrating a little deeper than a cream. Argan oil, or coconut oil are always a good option.

9.Even if your oily and congested, you must moisturize daily. You just have to find the right, lightweight, oil free moisturizer. You can have the oiliest skin but be dehydrated. It may seem like a good idea to ditch moisturizing to dry up the oil, but you need the hydration and up your water game.

10. DON’T NEGLECT THE BODY! I’m the worst for moisturizing the skin on my body. After showering I am literally freezing, and I don’t want to stand there applying creams and waiting for them to dry in. So I just use baby oil once I’m out of the shower, and it absorbs so quickly into my skin and leaves it nice and soft.

Daily Tinted Foundation with hydration nd SPF30

Daily Moisturizer with vitamins A,C,E and SPF30. 

PM Moisturizer, with Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid

This is my favourite! I use this x2 week, either as  mask on the skin for 20,30 mins OR I sleep in it overnight instead of night cream. It is amazing.

Just remember the next time your shopping for a new moisturizer, a good quality one protects your skin from environmental damage, provides nutrients for the skin and prevents a loss of moisture, therefore slowing down the ageing process.
