How to Help Large Pores

Large pores are probably one of the most common concerns clients have when they come to see me for a facial. And what people don’t realise is that you cant get rid of them, you can thank your genes and natural skin type for that. The oilier your skin the larger your pores appear. However there is a lot you can do at home to help reduce the size of them temporarily.

Your pores can become trapped with dirt, oil and makeup causing them to expand and become more visible. You can do a deep cleanse to clean your pores and you can even temporarily tighten them by making your face cold with ice and methanol. But you cannot shrink them by using products alone.

There are many products there that say they will ‘minimize your pores’ , but don’t be fooled, no matter what it says on the bottle, tub or tube- your pore size will not alter.

Avoid any products that make your skin tingle or include alcohol eucalyptus and lemon. These may feel like they are helping your skin, but a tingle is a sign of irritation and can leave your skin feeling tight and dry. If this happens- your skin will produce more sebum and oil, which can further enlarge your pores and lead to blockages, spots and blackheads.

What you need: A good wash off cleanser, light weight moisturiser, cell renewal serum and a weekly exfoliation and clay mask will make a huge difference to the complexion of your pores. Active ingredients such as enzymes and acids (ahas & bhas) eg. lactic and salicylic acid will help remove build up of dead skin cells and will unblock pores and blackheads.

You can buy or use any makeup you want to try and cover large pores but the only way to help the appearance of them effectively is by Deep cleaning with active ingredients making the pores appear smaller because they are cleaner.

Tip: What I sometimes do is sleep in a mask on the areas that are most congested in my skin. This is usually my nose and cheek area, so after I have cleansed in the evening I will apply a clay mask and sleep in it over night, this really works to make the pores look smaller!

Below are Products that I have used and Recommend to clients for congested skin, blackheads and large pores:
  • Dermalogica Special cleasning Gel
  • Daily Resurfacer (Leave on Exfoliant)
  • Gentle Cream exfoliation
  • Any Clay based mask- look for ingredients such as lactic and salicylic acid
  • Dermalogica Breakout control (Use instead of serum)
  • Dermalogica Cell renewal Booster (Use as your serum)
  • A Light weight moisturiser – with spf

Its not a bad thing having Oily skin.. You will age a lot better than other skin types and you are less prone to sensitivity and dehydration.

Happy cleaning!!
