Natural Remedies For Itching


An itchy skin gives skin irritation or a peculiar tingling of the skin. Itchiness is mainly caused by allergies to pollens, plants, pets, feathers, cosmetics, perfumes, chemicals, cleaning solutions and smokes. Dry skin is also one of the major causes of itching. The major symptoms of itchy skin are itching, scratching and rubbing on the skin. There is also a feeling of anxiety, sleeplessness and malaise in advanced cases.

Itching can turn into a great nuisance for you, in case you do not pay attention to the developing symptoms and take adequate measures. Thankfully, a range of home remedies are available for itching and you can try these for getting relief. Below I list some of the home remedies that will help you get imminent relief from complications related to itching.

1. Aloe Vera


With all its moisturizing action, aloe vera is one of the most effective skin smoothening agents. When you rub the gel over an itchy spot, it helps reduce the skin irritation in that area and provides quick relief from itching. Just break a leaf from the plant, cut it lengthwise using a knife and using a spoon, scoop out the jelly-like substance inside. Apply a little of this gel to the itchy area and leave it on for a few minutes. Aloe vera is also a great remedy for all skin ailments. Here is how it helps.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is a natural antiseptic which helps to destroy germs and hence provides relief from itching. Add 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to a tub of lukewarm water and soak yourself in it. You may also spray apple cider vinegar directly on the itchy areas.

White vinegar also helps to cure itching. Add a cup of white vinegar to warm bath and soak your body for 5-10 minutes. Alternatively, mince fresh garlic and mix with half cup of white vinegar. Apply to affected areas using a cotton ball. Leave for 10 minutes and rinse with warm water.

3. Baking Soda


An itch restricted to a small area can be managed with baking soda. All you need to do is add 1 part of water to three parts of baking soda to make a paste; then apply this paste to the itchy area. However, don’t use this remedy if the skin is broken. If the itch is spread all over the body, add a cup of baking soda into a tubful of lukewarm water and soak in it for half an hour; then dry in air.

4. Basil


Basil is another great home remedy for itching. 1/2 ounce of basil leaves need to be boiled in a jar filled with water.  As it boils, you will need to cover the same to prevent the aroma to escape. As the mixture cools down, take a clean piece of cloth and dip it in the mixture. The cloth soaked in the basil mixture needs to be applied to the itchy skin. You will get   imminent relief, in case you try this home remedy regularly.

5. Banana Peel 


The inside of a banana peel can be used to treat many skin conditions, itching  included. Simply cut off a piece of ripe banana peel a few inches long, and rub it on the itchy skin for a couple minutes, several times a day. This works best for bug bites and stings.

6. Coconut oil


Yes, your mother was indeed right when she said that coconut oil is good for itchy skin. Whether due to dry skin or an insect bite, whatever the cause of the itch, coconut oil can work wonders. The best way to use it is to rub a little coconut oil directly onto the affected area. If you suffer from a widespread itch all over the body especially during the winter, soak in a bathtub of lukewarm water; then just pat yourself dry and apply the oil all over. Coconut is also very effective in beating common ailments like mouth ulcers. 

7. Lemon Juice  


Using a lemon to get rid of itching that is due to inflammation of the skin is one of the most effective home remedies. The juice inside of the lemon contains a natural antiseptic, which reduces inflammation rather quickly. By squeezing a lemon, and applying the juice to the itchy area, you’ll be able to relieve the itching in no time.

8. Milk And Honey


Milk and honey is a good mixture that cures itching when it itching  due to dryness of skin. Mix honey and milk in equal amount and massage that on your skin daily 10 minutes before going to take bath. It will cure itching

9. Mint


Mint is another home remedy for itching. The menthol present in the mint has anti inflammatory properties and will give you some much needed relief. 1 ounce of dried mint leaves need to be boiled in one pint of boiling water. As the mixture cools down, dip a clean piece of cloth in the mixture and apply the same to the areas affected by itching. You will get relief from itching, in case the remedy is used for a week.

10. Mint And Sandalwood Powder


Crush few mint leaves and extract the juice. Mix mint juice and sandalwood powder in a bowl to make a smooth paste. Antifungal quality of both mint and sandalwood cures itching within few days. Both sandalwood and mint has cooling effect. It helps to soothe the skin when it itches. Use it every day to get the benefit.

11. Neem


Neem leaves provide relief from itching due to its anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties. Boil some neem leaves in water for about 10-15 minutes. Then let the water cool. Taking bath with this water helps to cure the problem of itching. Alternatively, you may apply neem oil to the areas affect by itching.
